The strategic Denderknoop project, launched in May, is developing a future vision for the station areas of Denderleeuw and Liedekerke, including the Dender riverbanks and station neighborhoods.
The strategic project Denderknoop: From Rail to Dender has been in the design phase since May. Over the coming year, project partners will work on a future vision for the station areas of Denderleeuw and Liedekerke. This includes attention to the station neighborhoods, the banks of the Dender river, Fabrieksstraat, and the Begijnenmeers business park.
Through the Denderknoop project, partners aim to create synergy between the stations, their surroundings, and the adjacent villages. At the stations, travelers should be able to switch between transport modes smoothly and safely. Better connections are also planned between the station neighborhoods on both sides of the tracks, and among these neighborhoods themselves.
In the Leeuwbrug and Kop van Liedekerke neighborhoods, the focus is on green community spaces and areas for amenities, social interaction, and relaxation. Along the Dender, raised quays and dikes will offer protection against flooding, while also providing opportunities for walking and cycling routes, nature, cooling, and new public spaces along the water.

"The future vision being developed should help us make choices that strengthen and improve our municipalities. This includes choices regarding traffic, housing, work, water safety, and nature."
In recent weeks, commuters at Denderleeuw station were surveyed about how they reach the station. In the coming months, residents, businesses, and other users will be involved through participation events, surveys, and feedback sessions.
On October 13, 14, and 15, partners, experts, and stakeholders will convene for a three-day co-creation lab. They will brainstorm, among other things, about the further development of the station areas of Liedekerke and Denderleeuw, and how the Dendervallei valley and surrounding nature, such as Wellemeersen, can be better accessed by residents.
“
"Denderknoop is taking shape in close collaboration with partners, residents, commuters, and businesses. Together with all stakeholders, we want to think, test, and adjust. This way, we are building a vision that is ambitious, supported, and feasible."
The new Atelier Dender in the station building of Denderleeuw will serve as a visible hub at the heart of the project area. The former Relay shop will function as a showcase and workspace for the Denderknoop project until the station renovation begins.
At Atelier Dender, visitors can view the model of the project area's future vision. Updates on the project's progress will be available at the entrance. At certain times, visitors are also welcome to contribute their ideas on-site.
“
"The result will be a vision for station areas and neighborhoods that are connected and water-safe. Neighborhoods that are not only ready for the future but also offer a green, pleasant space for travelers and residents."
The Denderknoop project is led by Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, in collaboration with the municipalities of Denderleeuw and Liedekerke, Provincie Vlaams-Brabant, the Departement Omgeving, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv, NMBS, Infrabel, and other partners. The project implements the Strategic Plan Space for Water, aligning station development, quality of life, and water safety.
Those wishing to contribute to Denderknoop can follow their municipality's Facebook page or visit Atelier Dender at Denderleeuw station.
