The municipality of Assenede, along with Bassevelde, Boekhoute, and Oosteeklo, is participating in the 'Gelukzak' campaign by waste intermunicipal IVM to reduce residual waste through better sorting.

With the campaign 'Your bin, a lucky bag: put only residual waste in it', waste intermunicipal IVM encourages residents to sort better and thus produce less residual waste. IVM aims to reduce the average of 122.5 kilograms of residual waste per inhabitant per year in its operating area to a maximum of 90 kilograms by 2030. According to sorting analyses, approximately 78% of current residual waste can be collected or processed separately.
Better sorting ensures that valuable materials get a second life. PMD packaging becomes new raw materials, and GFT waste is processed into compost and biogas. This also results in needing fewer residual waste bags.
To turn the waste bag into a 'lucky bag', residents are encouraged to sort packaging into PMD (blue bag), keep paper and cardboard separate, put GFT waste in the green container, and give other materials the correct destination, such as bringing discarded electrical appliances to a collection point or giving away usable items.
For sorting doubts, such as with an empty toothpaste tube, a broken oven dish, or an old remote control, IVM has developed the free SortingScan app. Users can take a photo of the item via their smartphone, after entering their postcode and municipality, to receive sorting advice.
More information about sorting can be found on IVM's campaign page. Practical information about waste collection in Assenede is available on the municipal page about door-to-door collections.
