In a beautifully renovated building on the Houtmarkt in Aalst, not only hundreds of jewels sparkle, but also cousins Chloë and Fré from Goldsmith Atelier Claessens. Although they are cousins, they are often mistaken for sisters, a compliment they greatly appreciate. The atelier, founded in 1983 by their grandparents, began as a classic jewelry store. Later, their two daughters joined the business and expanded it with their own jewelry design workshop. Now, Chloë and Fré, as managers, continue the tradition with their personal touch, focusing on unique pieces such as upcycled jewelry, mourning jewelry, and lockets with breast milk.
Despite the possibility of machine production, Chloë and Fré work largely by hand. They avoid mass production and use sustainable and recycled gold. Their approach is very personal: 'First, we sit down with the client and listen to their story,' says Fré. Chloë adds: 'I recently had a client who asked if she could give me a hug before leaving. That proves once again how personal our work is.' They also emphasize the importance of jewelry passed down through generations.
Fré shares with a smile: 'I am in a phase of life where I get to make many engagement rings for friends. I find that very enjoyable, though it's a pity I have to keep silent for so long.' She hopes that Chloë will one day make her wedding ring.
The personal approach and original designs of Goldsmith Atelier Claessens also attract the attention of well-known Flemish personalities. Danira Boukhriss Terkessidis visited for a birth jewel, and the Belgian Cheetahs (the national women's 4 x 400 meter relay team) had personalized necklaces made. One of their 'mascots' is actress Lynn Van Royen from Aalst. 'We get along very well and are also very proud of our Aalst connection,' says Chloë. Fré adds with a laugh that they would also love to welcome Geert Van Rampelberg to their shop, and that they essentially just invite their 'crushes'.
The passion for their work is evident in their smiles and the cheerful videos on social media. Chloë emphasizes the importance of the energy derived from work and finding a healthy work-life balance. In the atelier, they are supported by colleagues. Fré dreams of collaborating with an artist and would also love to welcome Dua Lipa.
