The municipality of Pelt is inviting residents to share their experiences with barriers, particularly those related to poverty, through conversations and interactive panels.

Finding affordable housing, paying school fees, a doctor's visit, or securing suitable work is not self-evident for everyone. Health problems, difficult home situations, language, or transportation also sometimes pose obstacles. Everyone encounters hurdles, but for people in poverty, these are often greater and harder to overcome.
At the weekly market in Neerpelt-Centrum, social policy staff and volunteers invited residents for a chat over a cup of coffee. The focus was on simple questions about the barriers people experience, what has helped them move forward, and how they have helped someone else. With an interactive panel and symbolic thresholds, the municipality raised awareness of the issue. The campaign focused not only on the obstacles faced by people in poverty but also on the small and large things that make a difference.
The initiative will continue in the coming weeks. Until November 3, interactive panels will be available at three locations: local service center Binnenhof, local service center Pelle Melle, and De Stroming. Residents can easily and anonymously share their experiences. The municipality aims to better understand the barriers residents face and what helps them overcome them.

"Poverty is about much more than a lack of money. It's also about the barriers people experience every day that often remain invisible to others. With this campaign, we primarily want to listen to our residents. Because behind every barrier lies a story, but often also a solution or a helping hand. By sharing these experiences, we are taking steps together towards a Pelt where everyone counts."
