Controlled prescribed burn on a dry slope with dead heather and rising smoke in a nature reserve in Flanders.

On Friday, October 2nd, the Agency for Nature and Forest (ANB) will conduct a controlled prescribed burn on a section of the Mechelen Heath in Maasmechelen.

This managed burn aims to provide space for nature to recover, rejuvenate vegetation, and boost biodiversity. Simultaneously, flammable material such as dead wood, shrubs, and young trees will be removed, thereby reducing the risk of large wildfires and ensuring better manageability of potential fires.
The burn will take place on a south-facing slope along the yellow walking loop. Due to the dry summer, a significant portion of the heather in this area has died off. The operation covers approximately 1.5 hectares.
During the operation, the yellow walking loop will be temporarily closed. An alternative walking route will be provided. The fire department will be on-site to ensure safety.
