In observance of Cancer Day, Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) is hosting a week of heartwarming activities across its Sint-Jan campus and ZOL Maas and Kempen locations to support patients.
On Cancer Day, observed on October 15, 2026, ZOL demonstrates its solidarity with cancer patients through yellow ribbons, kind words, and small gestures that make a significant difference. These activities are taking place at Sint-Jan campus and in ZOL Maas and Kempen.
Throughout the week leading up to Cancer Day, various heartwarming initiatives are organized for patients. These range from a pleasant brunch to small tokens such as a plant or care samples, all aimed at pampering them.
ZOL's nursing consultants, nurses, volunteers, and doctors are available to offer a listening ear, a warm conversation, and most importantly: time and attention.

"After every treatment, Anouk visits for a chat. I can tell her anything. She has become almost a friend. When she has visited, I feel better. With her, I can just be myself."
Sooi Jamers, who has been supported by onco-coach Anouk Wasiak for over five years following his liver cancer diagnosis, emphasizes the importance of this personal support. Anouk guides patients through their entire care journey, making a world of difference for Sooi. "The support from my wife, my family, and people like Anouk helps me move forward. You are nothing alone in life. Together, you are stronger."

"A flower like this might seem like a small gesture, but it's truly heartwarming. It's nice to have a little chat and take your mind off things."
Cor Aussems, currently undergoing his fourth chemotherapy treatment after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, experiences the positive impact of these initiatives. He appreciates the tokens and the opportunity to chat and distract himself.

"I have been a volunteer for ten years, and it remains wonderful to hand out a flower on Cancer Day. It brings a smile, a nice chat, and a moment of cheer on often difficult days."
Jeanne Lemmens, a volunteer for ten years, finds handing out flowers on Cancer Day a valuable activity that brings smiles and cheer.
Hundreds of ZOL staff members, including nursing consultants, nurses, doctors, psychologists, paramedics, and volunteers, dedicate themselves daily with their expertise, commitment, and humanity to support patients and their loved ones.
ZOL extends its sincere gratitude to all its staff and volunteers who make a difference every day with their listening ear, warm words, and dedicated care, ensuring no one faces their challenges alone.
