Limburg-based Yarrow, founded by military nurse Kristof Balliu and design studio Superellipse, has developed a globally novel concept for wound care: an electric brush that cleans dirty and non-healing wounds more efficiently and gently than existing alternatives. The 'Yarrow Wound Brush' promises faster healing times and a reduced infection risk.

The innovative idea for the Yarrow Wound Brush stems from the extensive experience of Kristof Balliu, both as a military nurse and as the founder of the Wound Care Center. He observed that the treatment of chronic wounds, affecting 2 to 3% of the global population, remains too traditional, leading to delayed healing and increased infection risk. The brush, already in use in America, is user-friendly, requires minimal training, and is more effective and gentler than current methods.
Yarrow, established in 2023 with co-shareholding from Superellipse, aims to redefine wound care standards. The brush heads are available in various sizes, the speed is adjustable for patient comfort, and the costs are kept low for both the initial investment and the disposable brush heads.
Following FDA approval in America, where initial batches are distributed via Alleva Medical, Yarrow is now focusing on the European market. The company anticipates commencing its European rollout in the third quarter of 2027, for which it has secured a breakthrough loan from the Limburg investment company LRM.
Gunter Plevoets, head of corporate lending at LRM, expressed confidence in the project: "Kristof Balliu and Superellipse are writing an impressive innovative story with Yarrow. It is remarkable to see how Kristof combines his expertise as a nurse with his drive for innovation, and then, with Pieter's design and business expertise, translates it into a product that can have a positive global impact on wound care. With our breakthrough loan, we confidently support Yarrow in conquering the European market as well."
