Limburg is set to become the first region in Europe to host a CERN Innovation Hub. POM Limburg and CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research based in Geneva, are collaborating to make advanced technologies from scientific research more accessible to Belgian companies. The hub, located at Corda Campus, aims to enhance knowledge and technology exchange and create new innovation opportunities. A letter of intent formalizes this partnership.
Technologies developed at CERN, which are world-leading, have applications beyond particle physics, including medical imaging, advanced sensor technology, precision industry, and data processing. This expertise offers significant potential for Belgian businesses. The new hub will serve as a bridge between CERN and the Belgian business community, focusing on aligning CERN's expertise with the needs of companies and research institutions to foster new research and development pathways and stimulate the creation of innovative products.
The CERN Innovation Hub aligns with POM Limburg's ambition to establish Limburg as a hub for Big Science. This large-scale scientific research relies on international collaboration and high-tech research infrastructure, whose developments offer opportunities beyond the research world. POM Limburg is building a broader Big Science Hub at Corda Campus to assist companies in identifying technological opportunities and establishing collaborations with international research centers.
Tom Vandeput, Chairman of POM Limburg and Deputy for Innovation Policy, highlighted the significance of this development: “That Limburg is the first region in Europe to receive a CERN Innovation Hub is a major recognition of our ambitions.” The province is allocating an additional 3.6 million euros for Big Science between 2026 and 2030. This collaboration with CERN is a first concrete step within this broader initiative, aimed at providing innovative SMEs better access to international knowledge and technology, thereby strengthening their competitiveness.”
Han Dols, Head of Innovation and Technology Transfer at CERN, also sees great potential: “This CERN Innovation Hub, which we are establishing together with POM Limburg, is one of a limited number of hubs we are setting up this year to test the new collaboration model in practice.” He added that the hub will help companies and researchers apply CERN's knowledge to challenges in various domains, thereby strengthening the Belgian innovation ecosystem, stimulating socio-economic growth, and creating tangible societal value.
The collaboration with CERN is part of a broader strategy by POM Limburg to strengthen ties with international research organizations, including the European Space Agency (ESA). The potential arrival of the Einstein Telescope in the Meuse-Rhine Euregio also presents opportunities for Limburgish and Belgian technology companies. Through the Big Science Hub, POM Limburg aims to become a key link between Belgian industry and major international research infrastructures, positioning Limburg more strongly within the international Big Science landscape.
