On Saturday, October 10, 2026, the municipality of Ravels, in collaboration with the Bond Beter Leefmilieu (BBL), the Vereniging voor Sterrenkunde (VVS), and Preventie Lichthinder vzw, is organizing the annual Night of Darkness.

This evening focuses on the issue of light pollution. Lighting that does not reach its intended area, such as light directed towards the starry sky or nearby nature reserves, is not only wasted energy and detrimental to one's wallet but can also disrupt the human biological clock. Due to increasing illumination, true darkness is becoming rare in Flanders.
Various studies indicate that a significant portion of residents wish for genuine darkness at night. Therefore, on October 8, the municipality will switch off all accent lighting. Residents, traders, and businesses are also encouraged to support this initiative by turning off as much outdoor lighting as possible.
