The municipality of Kalmthout is having three new fire water wells constructed on October 7, 8, and 12 in the Kalmthout Heathland. These wells, which will be approximately 80 meters deep, are intended to provide firefighters with on-site water, potentially saving crucial time in rapid fire suppression.
The locations for the new wells are at parking Zuid, midway along the path between Verbindingsstraat and Mont Noir, and at Molensteen along walking path Schaap. The work is expected to cause only limited disruption, and walkers will be able to pass the construction sites.
This construction is part of a cross-border initiative to strengthen the natural fire resilience of the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. On the Dutch side, three fire water boreholes were also previously installed, supplemented by new staging areas for fire vehicles in 2026. This is gradually creating a network of facilities on both sides of the border.
Together with improved accessibility, natural fire detection, risk analysis, and cooperation between emergency services, this contributes to better preparation for natural fires in the Grenspark. The new wells thus form a new link in this joint approach.
