Several residents in Edegem and nearby communities have recently contracted the West Nile Virus (WNV). Consequently, the risk level in the region is being elevated.
While the infection typically causes mild symptoms in most cases, approximately 1% of infected individuals can become severely ill, potentially developing meningitis. Older adults (50+) and individuals with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious complications.
There is currently no cause for alarm. The risk of illness remains limited, but vigilance and protection against mosquito bites are advised.
