The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Ghent University (UGent) are organizing the symposium 'Advancing Excellence in Photonics for Flanders and the World' on October 19 and 20. This event also celebrates the 20th anniversary of their joint master's program in Photonics Engineering, which has already trained over 500 specialists.

Photonics, the science and technology of light, has become a key technology with applications in optical communication, imaging, laser technology, photonic chips, artificial intelligence, medical and industrial sensors, and sustainable energy. The symposium will highlight the latest scientific developments and their translation into industrial applications, an area where Flanders has established a strong international position.
The plenary program on Monday, October 19, will take place at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) in Brussels, featuring internationally renowned speakers. These include Michael Lebby (photonics expert and entrepreneur), Françoise Chombar (Chair of the Board of Directors of Melexis), and Thomas Krauss (Professor at the University of York and pioneer in photonic crystals). They represent fundamental research, new technology concepts, and industrial innovation.
The symposium also celebrates twenty years of collaboration between VUB and UGent in photonics education. Since the establishment of the master's program in 2006, over 500 international photonics experts have graduated. Many alumni are active in leading companies and research institutions. During the symposium, alumni such as Peru Dharani (Barco), Pierre Wahl (Luceda Photonics), Adetunmise Dada (University of Glasgow), Joanne Oh (ASML), and Arno Bouwens (Amatera) will share their experiences.
On Tuesday, October 20, parallel sessions will be held on the campuses of UGent (Tech Lane Ghent Science Park - Campus Ardoyen) and VUB (B&B Wisteria, Herne). Prominent alumni and photonics professors will speak. At UGent, Yannick De Koninck (CTO at Thema Foundries) will discuss the production of photonic chips. At the VUB, Prof. Michael Vervaeke will explain the highly precise optical technology required for the Einstein Telescope, the planned European observatory for gravitational waves.
Science journalists are welcome on October 19 and 20. The program offers opportunities to speak with international experts, researchers, and industry representatives about current developments and future challenges in photonics. Interviews with keynote speakers, researchers, and alumni can be requested in advance. More information and the program can be found at www.studyphotonics.com/20YMP.
