Last winter, the VMM already carried out felling operations along the Antitankgracht between Fort Ertbrand and Driehoek in Stabroek. This was done according to the principle of 'coppicing with standards', where a vital tree was left standing every 20 meters and the rest were cut down to 10 to 20 cm above the ground to regrow.
Certain unwanted species, such as the American bird cherry and American oak, benefit greatly from this management method and can become dominant the following year. To prevent this, the VMM will return to this route in November for a second round of exotic species control.
These measures aim to create a more beautiful and varied green screen with predominantly native species. Through these actions, the VMM is implementing the landscape management plan for this protected watercourse.
