Fluvius has reached the milestone of one million public LED lamps in Flanders. More than eight out of ten public lighting points managed by Fluvius now operate with LED technology, resulting in significant energy savings and a longer lifespan.
Fluvius manages over 1.2 million lighting points in Flanders and will complete the full conversion to LED by the end of 2028 where local authorities request it. The partial switch to LED already yielded an energy saving of almost 43 percent by the end of 2025, equivalent to 181 GWh or the average annual electricity consumption of 51,824 households. LED lighting also lasts much longer than traditional street lighting.
In approximately two and a half years, nearly 400,000 public LED lamps have been added, placing Flanders among the European leaders in the transition to energy-efficient public lighting. Tom Ceuppens, Director of Customer and Network Operations at Fluvius, emphasizes that this achievement was reached together with Flemish cities and municipalities, and they are on track to complete the conversion by the end of 2028.
The milestone is being celebrated with a press event in Harelbeke on Monday, October 26, attended by Flemish Minister of Energy and Climate Melissa Depraetere, the city council, and representatives from Fluvius. Simultaneously, the one million LED lamp mark will be made visible in Dendermonde, Bornem, Diest, and Hamont-Achel.
“
"This milestone shows that the energy transition is not something for tomorrow. It is happening today, in our streets and neighborhoods. The fact that Harelbeke is the central venue for this celebration makes us particularly proud."
“
"Thanks to the investments, we are making our streets more energy-efficient and safer. We save energy without compromising on comfort or safety. This is good for the climate and for the sense of security of the people of Harelbeke. During the energy crisis, lights had to be turned off to save energy. Now we can keep them on. It proves that investing in climate is about more than just our emissions. It also makes a real positive difference in people's lives."
Fluvius is making the transition visible on October 26 with a public campaign in five Flemish cities. In Harelbeke, Dendermonde, Bornem, Diest, and Hamont-Achel, temporary messages will appear under public LED lamps to highlight the renewal of the public lighting system.
