Visitors had a low-threshold opportunity to learn about mental healthcare. Four fictional characters guided them through 14 stops on the campus, showcasing the versatility of psychiatric care, from treatment and recovery to housing, day activities, and family care. The scavenger hunt received enthusiastic responses, with visitors finding the stories interesting and the campus exploration surprising and enjoyable.
Children also had fun, particularly with the claw machine at the Work Therapy department, the identity carpet, and the folk games. Huis JEF saw many beautiful messages on its windows, and the drawing activity around 'cherished cuddles' resulted in colorful artworks.
The historical walks, which were fully booked before the open day, highlighted the significant interest in the campus's history and the Geel family care tradition. A new walk for individual visitors is scheduled for November 15th. The film screening 'Family Care: Past and Present' also drew many interested attendees, featuring a documentary on family care in the 1970s and a report on contemporary foster families.
OPZ Geel aimed to bring mental healthcare closer to the public with this open day. The organization looks back with satisfaction on the event and thanks all visitors, staff, and volunteers for their interest and enthusiasm.
