On Youth Movement Day, the Geel Historical Society (GGG) presented a new photo book to the youth of Geel, showcasing the youth movement life of past generations.

Following earlier publications on specific scout groups, the GGG now combines several Geel youth associations into one joint publication. Each association is allocated multiple pages with photos and a brief historical sketch, illustrating the lasting impact of youth movements on life in Geel. The initiative underscores that the tradition of youth movements remains vibrant today.
Alderman for culture Pieter Cowé emphasizes the importance of this tradition: "Youth movements are a tradition passed down from generation to generation. You see that very strongly in Geel. Our many youth movements are of great value to the city: they bring children and young people together, create life in Geel, and connect young and old. With this book and the digitization of all collected visual material, we preserve these memories and pass them on to today's youth."
For the book, the GGG collected both existing and unknown visual material from Geel youth associations. Photos stored for years in boxes, albums, or attics have regained significance and are being digitally archived in the City Archives where possible. The digital collection on youth associations currently comprises over 80,000 files, a collection significantly expanded by this initiative.
The book will have a festive presentation on Friday evening, October 23rd, at the Gasthuishoeve. Doors open at 6:30 PM, with the presentation starting at 7 PM. Visitors will gain insight into the development of youth movements in Flanders, hear testimonies about Geel's association life, and see photos evoking memories from the last forty years of the previous century. Participation is free and requires no registration.
A total of 200 copies of the book were printed. Over 100 copies were already sold during the pre-sale. Approximately 20 copies are still available. Reservations can be made by emailing archief@geel.be. The book costs 25 euros.
