Thanks to boost subsidies from the Flemish government, the municipality is investing over €300,000 in the aftercare of Essen's schools. Each school received €85 per student to invest in quality, safety, health, play space, and accessibility. Out-of-school care service IBO Dol-fijn also benefited from additional funds to strengthen its offering.
Tim Van Tichelen, director of the primary school College, used his budget to create more space. "In 2025, we had already invested in our playground. To make even more use of it, also in bad weather, we have installed a stretch tent. This allows for dry work and play, not only during aftercare but also during lessons and breaks. The children are eagerly using it!"
The school replaced the gymnastics mat, centrally located on the playground, and purchased a caravan, now known as Club Caravan. "This is a huge added value as a quiet corner, because the children can play games, read a book, or chat there. The more space, peace, and structure we can offer, the better," stated the director.
