AG Vespa will commence the restoration of the exterior of the Borgerhout district house on October 26, 2026. The protected monument, dating from 1886-1889, will include a renewed tower structure, facades, roofing, windows, and a repaired entrance hall floor. The carillon will also undergo thorough inspection and partial renewal.

The restoration works on the former town hall at Moorkensplein, a beautiful example of Neo-Flemish Renaissance style, encompass the tower structure, facades, roofing, windows, and the entrance hall floor. The carillon, with 47 bells weighing a total of 5,500 kilograms of bronze, will receive a thorough inspection and partial renewal with a new keyboard and traction system. The works, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, will be carried out by a contractor appointed by AG Vespa.
The building, protected as a monument since 1974, is considered valuable heritage. The City of Antwerp is investing over 3 million euros, and Flanders, through the Agency for Immovable Heritage, is contributing a premium of 300,000 euros. Alderman for heritage Koen Kennis emphasizes the district house's importance as the square's calling card, while Flemish Minister for Immovable Heritage Ben Weyts calls it an icon that must remain part of the Antwerp skyline.
The contractor will replace the slates on the tower's roof and repair other roofs as needed. The tower's timber structure will be locally reinforced and receive a new breathable paint layer. All windows will be fitted with insulating glazing, with stained glass repaired where necessary. Cracks and open joints on the facades will be addressed, the cornice will be painted, and gutters checked. The entrance hall floor will also be repaired.
The 47 carillon bells will be temporarily dismantled for overhaul. A new carillon keyboard and a new traction system will be installed, along with two additional small bells. Alderman for district affairs Ken Casier highlights that Borgerhout's carillon, alongside the cathedral's, is a unique instrument that gives a voice to the district.
The works are scheduled to start on October 26, 2026, and will last until the end of 2027. Temporary scaffolding will be erected on the square, but the district house's counter services will remain unaffected. Only during the floor repairs in the entrance hall will the monumental entrance be temporarily closed; the side entrance will remain open.
