The unique nature reserve of Cassenbroek, owned by Natuurpunt and situated between the village centers of Bonheiden and Rijmenam, has a history spanning thousands of years. Once the Demer river flowed here, and natural processes created a peat deposit that now provides a home for diverse plant and animal species. This makes Cassenbroek a valuable area of wet nature.
A renewed boardwalk, serving as a connection between Huurstraat and Cassenbroek-Heidijkstraat, once again allows hikers to discover and experience this special landscape up close. The existing path had become heavily worn and was beyond repair, leading to the decision for a complete renewal.
The local government allocated the necessary funds in the spring. In August, the old boardwalk was dismantled and replaced with a brand new one. The adjoining walking path from Cassenbroek-Heidijkstraat was also improved. The Municipality of Bonheiden invested €30,000 in these works.
The Mayor of Bonheiden emphasized the area's importance: "Cassenbroek is a very valuable piece of wet nature in our municipality. With the new boardwalk, we make it possible again to experience this special landscape up close, without losing sight of the fragile nature. We hope many residents will enjoy walking here again and discover how beautiful nature can be close to home."
The collaboration between the Municipality of Bonheiden and Natuurpunt for the walking path dates back to 2000, when a management agreement was concluded. As the path could no longer be repaired after many years, the local government took on the costs for the complete reconstruction, while Natuurpunt remains responsible for its ongoing maintenance and management. This investment strengthens the quiet roads and gives people every opportunity to discover Bonheiden and Rijmenam on foot.
With the renewed walking and boardwalk, Cassenbroek is ready to be explored again. Hikers will get a beautiful view of a unique and valuable wet nature reserve between Bonheiden and Rijmenam.
