Visitors entering the Will Tura Sportpark are now greeted by the silhouette of Veurne's most famous honorary citizen. Artist Raphaël Wackenier, also known as RaWa, has created an ode to the 'Emperor of Flemish Song', which is now visible to all.
The impressive artwork, made of corten steel and Belgian blue stone, is located at the corner of Noordstraat and the sports hall parking lot. This finally gives the Sportpark a clear reference to the person it is named after.
Raphaël Wackenier, an artist from Alveringem, has been a fan of Will Tura for decades. In 2018, the City of Veurne held a competition for a statue to celebrate Tura's 80th birthday. Although Wackenier came in second place, he decided to realize his design this year out of great admiration for the singer.
To ensure his artwork could be enjoyed by everyone, RaWa offered it to the City of Veurne for placement in a public area. Following discussions with the cultural council, the Sportpark was chosen as the location, where visitors are now welcomed by the silhouette of Will Tura.
