The City of Roeselare, in collaboration with Aquafin and the Province of West Flanders, has officially reopened the renovated Diksmuidsesteenweg after eighteen months of intensive work.

The key access road, located between the Rijksweg and the Westlaan, has been transformed into a more attractive living environment, with enhanced protection against heavy rainfall and safe cycling paths. The city thanked local residents for their patience during the construction with a reception.
The renovation is part of a larger project to clean up the Klauwaertsbeek. A new separated sewage system now handles wastewater and rainwater independently, while a new collector and buffer pipe temporarily store rainwater to reduce the risk of flooding in the city center. By directing wastewater to the treatment plant, the water quality of the stream is improved.
The street has been greened with 50 new trees and over 2000 m² of green zones and water-permeable paving, turning the formerly grey street into a green oasis. New LED lighting contributes to both a sense of safety and energy savings.
Specifically for cyclists, wide, safe bike paths have been constructed, supported by the Province of West Flanders and the Flemish Government. These improvements make cycling more attractive for daily commutes.

"These works were incredibly important for both the Schierveldewijk and the city center. We are protecting residents during periods of heavy rainfall and ensuring we can store more rainwater to better cope with dry spells."
