The new campaign ‘Healthy Food Rocks in the Vuurtorenwijk’ aims to inspire residents to choose healthy meals and snacks. The official launch took place on Thursday, October 15, in Daniel Verleyepark, where residents enjoyed fresh soup and healthy desserts, and received information about local initiatives.
This campaign is part of a broader analysis of the food environment in the neighborhood, which has changed in recent years with new shops and the establishment of a weekly market. The Vuurtorenwijk was chosen as a pilot project due to these developments.
In the coming period, the campaign will be visible in the streetscape with posters, window stickers at participating businesses, and ground markings. Children can participate with coloring pages and by submitting their own recipes for a chance to win a rest-O-cheque of 50 euros.
The city aims to show that healthy food is affordable and offers free workshops and guidance to schools on healthy eating, such as assembling a healthy lunchbox.
The public domain also contributes with community gardens, a shared garden, and the planting of edible greenery, including a pick-your-own route with free fruits, berries, nuts, herbs, and flowers. Guided picking walks are organized.
The community center De Ballon will highlight fresh lunch options for families. Additionally, a new food point has been established by the welfare group Sluisvliet at wijkpunt Vuurtoren, offering food distribution every second and fourth Friday of the month since April 24, 2026.
The campaign, part of the European project Bauhaus Bites, aims to make healthy food attractive and accessible by fostering collaboration and ensuring healthy food is easily reachable in the neighborhood. The project is supported by the European Union (Grant Agreement no. 101182352).
