In Menen, the demolition of vacant properties on Rijselstraat and Oostkaai begins on Monday, October 19, 2026. The works, mandated as a safety measure by the mayor, will continue until March 2027.

The demolition of buildings at Rijselstraat 144 to 182 and Oostkaai 2 and 3 is a safety measure ordered by the mayor. According to the city council, the properties pose a safety risk due to frequent unauthorized entry and resulting damage, and the order aims to prevent serious incidents.
Contractor TM Monseré – Van Tornhaut will begin preparatory work on October 19, followed by the actual demolition and debris removal. The project is expected to last until March 2027, after which the cleared sites will be seeded.
The demolition works will take place on weekdays between 7 AM and 5 PM. During the demolition on the Oostkaai, traffic will be temporarily reduced to one lane in alternating directions. Parking will remain accessible via Vlamingenstraat.

Meanwhile, the city council of Menen has achieved a breakthrough in the appeal procedure against the environmental permit for the Leiewerken (Leie works). This allows De Vlaamse Waterweg to straighten the waterway, redesign the banks, and build a new bridge on the Rijselstraat. Another legal procedure concerning expropriation and land use is still delaying the realization. If the procedure is favorable, the Leiewerken could start in 2027.
