Three women from Zemst, Sofie Van Opstal, Lieve Van Haesendonck, and Anja Voet, share their passion for agriculture and demonstrate how they make a difference in the sector today.

Although their paths are entirely different, Sofie Van Opstal, Lieve Van Haesendonck, and Anja Voet share the same love for agriculture. Sofie combines her job as an IT analyst with a farm where she cultivates Belgian endive and parsley with her husband. She finds particular satisfaction in the entire growth process, from a small seed to a fresh product on people's plates.
For Lieve, whose family has been in agriculture for generations, farming is in her blood. She was literally born and raised on the farm in Weerde, where she now runs an agricultural business with her brothers. In the farm shop, she shares her passion for healthy and local food with customers daily. She believes farmers and residents have more in common than often thought: they both strive for quality local products and a strong living environment.
The choice for agriculture was also a natural one for Anja. She took over her parents' business and is now responsible for the cattle. The variety, working in nature, and the challenges each season brings make the work engaging for her.
What do these three women have in common? They show that female farmers are making a difference on farms today. From animal care and administration to sales, machinery, and fieldwork: they are there every day.
Did you know that 2026 is the year of the farmer's wife? Many Zemst farmers are also active in the Landbouwraad (Agricultural Council), which advises on agriculture, open space, nature, and rural development in the municipality.
