The city of Tienen has completed the greening of the children's zone at the main cemetery, giving the area a softer and more serene appearance. Simultaneously, the next phase of the park cemetery is being prepared, emphasizing de-paving, greening, biodiversity, and an enhanced experience.
Alderman for cemeteries Nele Daenen explains that following the creation of an accessible park cemetery with an urn field in the previous administrative period, the next phase will include a scattering meadow with greenery. The restoration of the cemetery wall and a new use for the former gravedigger's house are also being investigated.
The city draws attention to the lists of expired concessions at the cemeteries. At the main cemetery and the churchyards in Grimde and Bost, concessions can be renewed until October 31, '26. At the cemeteries in Kumtich, Hakendover, Sint-Margriete-Houtem, Oorbeek, and Overlaar, this is possible until March 31, '27. New lists will be posted from late October for Goetsenhoven, Vissenaken, Oplinter, Kumtich, and Tienen, with a one-year renewal period.
To renew a concession, one can contact the cemetery services at 016 24 73 24 or begraafplaatsen@tienen.be. Concessions for children's graves can be renewed free of charge; for others, the conditions of the fee regulation apply.
“"During the gathering, texts about comfort will be read, interspersed with subdued cello music. The moment of solace will conclude with a candle ceremony."
On Sunday, November 1, '26, at 3:00 PM, the city is organizing a musical and poetic moment of solace at the main cemetery, under the theme 'United in comfort, supported by each other'. Participating communities include the Catholic Church, The Evangelical Church Tienen, The Humanist Circle, and The Tienen Muslim Community.
On Friday, November 13, '26, at 3:30 PM, the new 'troostmuur' (wall of solace) will be officially inaugurated. This memorial wall offers a place for porcelain photos of the deceased to be hung without names and dates, serving as a silent yet lasting remembrance. Porcelein photos can still be submitted during opening hours at the cemetery services in the town hall of Tienen.
In the period around All Saints' Day, potholders will be provided at the cemeteries, and visitors are asked not to make holes in the gravel around the graves, which simplifies maintenance and maximizes the impact of investments in the green design of the cemeteries.
Due to works on the Aarschotsesteenweg, the main cemetery is currently difficult to access. During the All Saints' Day weekend, the cemetery can be reached on foot via the Aarschotsesteenweg. Outside this period, it is recommended to use the entrance via Pollepelstraat.
