From September 18 to 25, the Week of the Sustainable Municipality takes place annually, organized by the VVSG. This year, SDG 17: ‘Partnership for the Goals’ is central. In Lubbeek, nine local sustainable heroes are committed to this cause.
Ferm Mamadepot Lubbeek is a meeting place where volunteers and visitors from diverse backgrounds come together. They promote sustainability by offering second-hand goods, a cozy coffee corner, and creative activities.
In the quiet village of Pellenberg, where community life had dwindled, an enthusiastic group of residents under the name Wij zijn Pellenberg is addressing this through citizen participation. A 'Dream Day' brought nearly 200 residents together to share ideas, leading to eight theme teams working on meeting benches, grandparent-grandchild game afternoons, and a local market. They also aim to bridge the gap between residents and the municipal council.
The Fietsersbond Lubbeek (Cycling Union Lubbeek) collaborates with schools and the municipal council to make Lubbeek more bicycle-friendly. They organize cycling caravans and identify route bottlenecks to create a safe and pleasant cycling municipality.
Okra Binkom, a meeting point for seniors, focuses on openness, encounters, and activities like chair dancing and outings. They also support a school project in Nepal and integrate togetherness, sustainability, and solidarity into their program.
KIVI Binkom (Church/Chapel Is For Everyone) opens its church building for various activities, ensuring it remains a sustainable and multifunctional space for all generations. Following renovation works, the church will be festively reopened on December 19, 2026.
The Groendienst Lubbeek (Green Services Lubbeek), part of the Infrastructure department, manages the maintenance and renewal of municipal infrastructure, including green spaces, roads, and buildings. They mow over 170 km of verges twice a year and led the renovation of the old De Maurissens castle in Pellenberg into a new school.
Antoine Backe, a volunteer at Natuurpunt and chairman of the local Environmental Council, is dedicated to greening and making Lubbeek more sustainable. He contributed input to the climate action plan and works on its local implementation.
Frank Baeyens volunteers at the social shop 'De Sleutel' and the homework class Linden, assisting with sales and guiding children with their homework.
