Proficiency in Dutch is crucial for children's development and societal participation. Through the Taalheldendecreet (Language Hero Decree), the Flemish government supports schools in preventing and addressing language deficits, and enhancing the language skills of all pupils. GBS ’t Rakkertje is strategically using these funds by appointing a language expert who will receive intensive training and support the school team in developing a robust, school-wide language policy.
Mayor Irina De Knop emphasizes the importance of language: “Language is a key to opportunities. As a local authority, we want every child to have the best possible chance to develop. By investing in strong Dutch language skills, we not only help children succeed in school but also give them more opportunities for their future.”
At GBS ’t Rakkertje, Dutch is integrated into daily school activities. Pupils visit the library monthly and conclude each school day with a 'reading quarter'. Books and stories are central during the Read-Aloud Week, Children's Book Month, and Poetry Week. The school also uses knowledge-based themes to build new vocabulary and deepen understanding. Cultural outings, such as theatre performances, and 'language backpacks' with books and language games provide additional practice opportunities, including at home.
The appointed language expert will assist teachers with language-focused instruction, analyzing language results, and tailoring approaches to students' needs. Children requiring extra support will receive additional language-stimulating activities. Parents are also involved in their children's language development.
Director Katrien Van Den Eeckhout explains: “We don't want to limit Dutch to the language lesson but actively engage with it every day. Through (read-aloud) moments, rich themes, and targeted support, we give children more opportunities to discover words, build knowledge, and communicate with confidence. We do this together as a school team, paying attention to the needs of every child.”
Through this approach, GBS ’t Rakkertje aims to strengthen the language skills of all pupils. The local municipality of Lennik and the school are jointly building strong educational opportunities, because every child deserves the chance to become a true language hero.
