The chapel, part of the castle farm Hof Ter Heyde and with a core possibly dating back to the 15th century, is in good condition. However, the 19th-century canopy shows signs of wood rot, cracks, water infiltration, and instability, according to Monumentenwacht. Restoration is necessary to prevent further decay.
The municipality is overseeing the project in cooperation with ERF Vlaams-Brabant, which provides support for technical and administrative follow-up. Special attention will be paid to the canopy's color. Experts are examining old paint layers and materials to determine a historically correct color scheme.
During the restoration, craftsmen will preserve as much of the existing woodwork as possible. Only parts that can no longer be repaired will be replaced. If necessary, the canopy will be removed from the facade for restoration in a specialized workshop.
The current plan is for the restored canopy to be reinstalled above the chapel door in the course of 2027. This will help preserve a recognizable piece of Hoeilaart's heritage.
