Elia, the manager of the Belgian high-voltage grid, is organizing an information market on Thursday, October 28, 2026, at the municipal event hall Hangaar 44, Steenbergestraat 44 in Glabbeek. The meeting aims to inform residents about the planned works for the installation of a new high-voltage cable between Tienen, Glabbeek, Kersbeek, and Diest.
These works are necessary to strengthen the high-voltage grid from 70 kilovolts (kV) to 150kV, in response to the increasing demand for electricity from both industry and households. The new underground high-voltage cable (150kV) will run between the high-voltage station of Tienen, via that of Kersbeek, to the station in Diest. In the long term, the current overhead 70kV connection between Diest and Tienen will be dismantled.
Residents living along the planned route will receive a personal invitation. Other interested residents are also welcome at the information market, where project managers will provide more details on the project's purpose, timing, and potential disruptions, and will answer your questions.
The application for the environmental permit for the cable connection is scheduled for November. This will be followed by a public inquiry where plans can be viewed. After obtaining the permit, works are expected to start in mid-2027 and last until mid-2031. Residents will be informed by letter about the exact duration before the works commence.
