Farmers in the Pajottenland & Zennevallei region can still apply for free shade trees until the end of next year through the Airkoe campaign, an initiative by the Flemish Government and Regional Landscapes.

Last year, the Airkoe campaign was launched, allowing active farmers in the Pajottenland & Zennevallei region to receive and have shade trees planted free of charge. So far, 9 farmers have participated, resulting in the planting of 75 shade trees. However, the campaign aims for 125 trees and runs until the end of next year, with opportunities to register still available.
The Airkoe campaign is a collaboration between the Flemish Government and the Regional Landscapes. Its objective is to support livestock farmers in areas of animal welfare, biodiversity, and landscape care. The slogan ‘Switch on the air-cow: plant free shade trees for your livestock’ encourages farmers to plant one or more trees in their grazing pastures.
Trees in pastures provide natural cooling and help prevent heat stress in cattle and other livestock. This project contributes to the Flemish Codex Animal Welfare, which mandates shelter for outdoor animals from January 1, 2029. Furthermore, trees enhance biodiversity and create a more attractive landscape.
Active farmers who are interested can request free shade trees via www.airkoe.vlaanderen. A tree expert from the Regional Landscape will visit the site to determine the best location, tree species, and quantities. Subsequently, the trees will be planted, including stakes and protection against browsing.
