Across Flanders, hundreds of activities are organized to bring people together and encourage them to make time for their mental health. In Boutersem, several of these initiatives are taking place, organized by the gezondheidsraad Boutersem (health council) in collaboration with Bibliotheek Boutersem (library) and LIVactive. Participation in all activities is free, but advance registration is required via vrijetijd@boutersem.be or 016 72 10 71.
On Thursday, October 1st at 8 PM in the Boutersem Library, Sonja Custers will give a lecture on her psychiatric vulnerability. As a psychologist-psychotherapist, she shares from her own experience, after multiple psychiatric hospitalizations, how strong she is in life now. With her project ‘Psychisch Kwetsbaar, Sterk in Beeld’ (Psychiatrically Vulnerable, Strongly Portrayed), she aims to question public perceptions of psychiatry and bipolarity. Registration is possible via boutersem.bibliotheek.be/formulier/2026bpsychischkwetsbaar.
On Saturday, October 3rd at 10 AM, the 'Gelukswandeling' (Happiness Walk) starts in the Boerenzaal Kerkom. This mindfulness walk of approximately 4 km invites participants to slow down, clear their minds, and consciously enjoy their surroundings with all their senses. Along the way, simple exercises will be performed to help participants be more present. A cup of soup will be served afterwards.
Zaal Iris Cultureel Centrum will host 'Stoelyoga' (Chair Yoga) on Tuesday, October 6th at 2 PM. This accessible session uses a chair for gentle stretching, strengthening muscles, releasing tension, and breathing more freely. No experience is necessary, and the session is ideal for those who sit a lot or suffer from tense shoulders.
Finally, on Thursday, October 8th at 7:30 PM in the Gemeentelijke feestzaal (Municipal Hall), the 'Adem in, Relax uit' (Breathe in, Relax out) session will take place. For one hour, participants will learn to release tension and create more peace in body and mind through simple breathing techniques and gentle movements. These techniques can also be easily used at home. The session is guided by Eveline from LIVactive, and participants are provided with headphones to create their own bubble.
