The municipality of Asse is participating on October 10 in the Night of Darkness, an initiative to highlight the importance of the nocturnal landscape and save energy.

For years, the WWF has organized Earth Hour in March. In October, Levende Nachten organizes the Night of Darkness, a campaign to help us rediscover the beauty of the nocturnal landscape. In many places in Flanders, there is excessive and incorrect lighting, which is detrimental to nocturnal nature and energy consumption.
The municipality of Asse is participating again this year, in collaboration with grid operator Fluvius. All interactive public lighting, which can be switched off remotely, will be deactivated on the night of October 10.
Classical public lighting and non-interactive LED lighting will also be switched off as part of this action. This will be done manually by a Fluvius employee. As it is not organizationally feasible to make these manual adjustments on Saturday and Sunday mornings for all participating municipalities, lighting in some streets will be switched off as early as Thursday, October 8, or Friday, October 9. The lights will be turned back on Monday or Tuesday evening, October 12 or 13.
In Zellik-centrum, lighting will remain on for safety reasons, as the annual market takes place there during the Night of Darkness.
The municipality of Asse calls on residents and businesses to participate in the Night of Darkness. This can be done by switching off (outdoor) lighting and advertising panels on October 10, or by extension throughout the weekend.
