The Province of East Flanders and Prevent Agri vzw have launched a new brochure with practical tips for fire prevention on agricultural and horticultural businesses. The publication, titled 'How do I prevent fire on my farm?', aims to encourage farmers to proactively address fire risks.
The brochure is an initiative of the Province of East Flanders and Prevent Agri vzw and emphasizes that making an agricultural or horticultural business fire-safe does not have to be complicated or expensive. The partners hope to encourage farmers to proactively engage with fire prevention.
The brochure will be distributed at information sessions organized by both entities. A digital version is also available via the Prevent Agri website, which offers more information on fire safety for agricultural and horticultural businesses.

"A fire can lay waste to a farmer's life's work in minutes, and we naturally want to prevent that. That is why the Province of East Flanders, together with Prevent Agri vzw, opts for a proactive approach to strengthen business fire safety. With this practical brochure, we help East Flanders farmers to identify and address risks in a timely manner."
Agricultural and horticultural businesses present specific fire risks due to machinery, electrical installations, and material storage. Measures such as safe storage of flammable materials, proper maintenance, caution during risky activities, a smoking ban, clear emergency exit signage, and attention to self-ignition can reduce the chance of fire.
To limit damage if a fire does break out, easily accessible and well-maintained fire extinguishers, fire-resistant materials, sufficient safety distances, good accessibility for the fire brigade, and automatic fire detection with notification are essential.

"During our farm visits, we notice that the risk of fire often lurks in small, unnoticed corners. Think, for example, of the increasing automation and electronics in stables. That is precisely why it is important to pause and consider fire safety. Often, simple, achievable, and affordable interventions make a big difference."
