Young people looking to improve life in Merelbeke-Melle can join the youth council. Examples of projects that enhance the lives of young people include a skate park, a party, a meeting place, or a safe cycle path. The youth council aims to realise these plans and is seeking support. Bavo Kleysman and Alexandro De Zutter, both 19 years old, are actively involved in the youth council.
Bavo Kleysman, chairman of the youth council, emphasises the importance of awareness. "Many young people are not yet familiar with our work, yet the youth council is the place where young people can bring about change." A successful presence at the Christmas market in Melle led to more followers on Instagram and TikTok.
Vice-chairman Alexandro De Zutter shares the pride in participating in the multi-year plan. "Through Bataljong's 'Aanstekers' project, we surveyed our peers online. Their wishes and ideas formed the basis for our advice to policymakers." He stresses the importance of policymakers recognising the voice of young people, as youth represents the future of the municipality.
The survey revealed a lack of meeting places where young people can be themselves. The youth council intends to prioritise this and holds monthly meetings. These are described as pleasant gatherings, often with pizza, where young people of different ages inspire each other and friendships can form.
Young people aged 15 and over who live, work, or study in Merelbeke-Melle are encouraged to join. Membership in a youth association is not required. Interested individuals can contact them via jeugdraadmerelbekemelle@gmail.com.
