On Friday, October 23rd, storm Austen is expected to reach our country, bringing (very) strong gusts of wind and significant rainfall.

The RMI (Royal Meteorological Institute) has issued code orange for wind and code yellow for rain due to the predicted storm conditions. Safety services and authorities are on standby to monitor the situation and address any incidents.
Residents are advised to prepare thoroughly. Recommendations include closing windows and doors, securing loose items such as garden furniture and play equipment, keeping gutters and drains clear to prevent waterlogging, and checking roof tiles. It is also advised to bring (house) pets indoors and to only place waste outside on the morning of collection, as much out of the wind as possible, with bags tightly tied and paper/cardboard well-bound.
During the storm, it is advised to postpone non-essential travel. Those who must travel are asked to adjust their driving behavior: drive slower, avoid overtaking, and be extra cautious. Parking or sheltering under or near trees is strongly discouraged, as is driving through flooded roads. Parks, forests, and nature reserves are also best avoided.
In case of lightning, it is recommended to switch off electronic devices and unplug them. Do not walk during a lightning strike; stand still and crouch, and stay away from metal structures.
For fire brigade assistance with storm or water damage, citizens can use the e-counter www.1722.be or that of their local emergency zone. Those without internet access can call 1722, and patience is requested due to the expected high volume of calls.
