After two years of work, the renewed Mechelse Poort intersection in Dendermonde is almost ready. On Sunday, October 18th, this will be celebrated with a festive opening where visitors can discover the new bike tunnels, bike bridge, bike paths, and the new bike plaza. The former intersection has undergone a thorough transformation to make the traffic situation safer and clearer, with more space for cyclists and pedestrians.
Motorized traffic has been using the renewed intersection since the end of August. From mid-October, cyclists and pedestrians can also fully utilize the new infrastructure. The festive opening starts at 1 PM with a surprise program. Afterwards, visitors can explore the new bike plaza, discover the bike tunnels, and admire the new cycle connections.
During the event, various activities will be available: testing balance on a unicycle, free bike checks and engraving, learning about the history of the location, experiencing a new artwork in the bike tunnel, and enjoying a free drink. Attendees are encouraged to come by bike.
Practical information: the event takes place on Sunday, October 18th, 2026, from 1 PM to 4 PM, on and around the new bike plaza between Leopoldlaan and Noordlaan. No registration is required.
Cycling clubs are especially welcome and will receive a cycling route of approximately 55 km, secure bike parking, the opportunity to be included in the opening photo, sandwiches, and a gadget. Clubs are asked to register their attendance and number of cyclists by October 12th via sport@dendermonde.be for preparation purposes.
School students will also have their own opening moment on Monday, October 19th, from 3:15 PM to 4:30 PM, with music provided by a DJ. On Thursday, October 22nd, at 10 AM, the police will lead a guided tour through the new bike tunnels. Registration for this activity can be done by calling 052 25 17 30 or emailing ldc.denderpoort@dendermonde.be.
