The 'Oproerkraaiers' project in Buggenhout and Dendermonde brings together young people and inmates to explore the theme of 'resistance' through an exhibition and artistic creations.

The project Oproerkraaiers, a collaboration involving institutions such as the BiB of Buggenhout and Dendermonde, the City Museum, the remand prison of Dendermonde, Erfgoedcel Dijk92, artist duo Robert and Frank, theater maker Lara Staal, and a secondary education class from Buggenhout and Dendermonde, culminates in an exhibition on resistance in all its forms.
More than just an exhibition, Oproerkraaiers is the result of an intensive process with students from the 6th year of welfare sciences at the Sint-Vincentiuscollege in Buggenhout. For a year, they explore the theme of ‘resistance’, examining both the past and its contemporary relevance. The project encourages critical thinking about societal issues and diverse viewpoints.
A unique component is the research into resistance within the context of incarceration. Students from Buggenhout engage in a letter exchange with inmates from the Dendermonde prison. This correspondence makes the theme tangible: what does resistance mean when freedom is limited, where are the boundaries, and how can one voice their opinion in a closed environment? The letters will be integrated into the final artistic outcome, showcased from November 10.
During a project week from October 26 to 30, students will visit the Dendermonde City Museum and collaborate with artists Frank & Robbert on an artistic installation. This installation will be prominently displayed from November 10 in the Sint-Niklaaskerk, allowing students to present their ideas on resistance to a wide audience. The project emphasizes co-creation and active participation by the youth as creators.
The opening evening on November 10 begins at 7:30 PM with a lecture ‘Youth in Resistance’ by vzw Helden van het Verzet. This provides an introduction to the theme, focusing on the role of young people in resistance during wartime. Subsequently, a teacher and/or student will discuss the project's journey, followed by the official opening of the exhibition. Erfgoedcel Dijk92 will contribute with a light installation. The evening concludes in the resistance café.
OPROERKRAAIERS aims to show that resistance has many faces: big or small, historical or contemporary, individual or collective. It can manifest as a protest, a song, a work of art, a conversation, or a letter, often starting with a question or an idea. Participation is free. Registration for the opening evening is possible via https://buggenhout.bibliotheek.be/formulier/oproerkraaiers or by phone at 052 33 95 91.
