The design for the renewal of the Grote Markt in Aalst, a project by architect Maarten Van de Voorde of MMXV Architecten and design firm Omgeving, encompasses not only the central square but also adjacent streets like parts of Molenstraat, Kerkstraat, Nieuwstraat, and Kattestraat.
Four guiding principles shape the design: the belfry as the undisputed focal point, universal accessibility, the integration of more greenery for climate resilience, and maintaining the square's vibrancy for shopping, terraces, relaxation, and events.
Key features include a large bench near the belfry, a relocated statue of Dirk Martens, the removal of the roundabout in front of the city hall, and the addition of extra trees for shade and a green frame to views from surrounding streets. Light-colored stones will enhance the square's appearance and complement the renovated belfry.

The construction timeline is coordinated with local events, using the abbreviations 'V.C.' (Voor Carnaval - Before Carnival) and 'N.C.' (Na Carnaval - After Carnival) to guide the schedule. From late September until Aalst Carnaval 2027, preparatory utility works and archaeological excavations will take place. After the February break, the actual reconstruction of the sewer system and superstructure will begin.
Work on the northern section of the Grote Markt (from the Borse van Amsterdam to the city hall and Molenstraat) will continue until carnival 2028. Subsequently, the southern part, from Hopmarkt to Kerkstraat, will be addressed. Full completion is expected by the end of 2028.
On September 28, SOLVA will commence archaeological excavations, focusing on areas for new sewer and utility lines. On Monday, October 26, preparatory utility works for electricity, telecom, and water renewal will start. These activities are coordinated to minimize disruption.
Major events such as the Prins Carnaval Election, the OverWinteren Christmas market, and Aalst Carnaval 2027 will proceed as planned. The Saturday market will relocate from October 3 to the Parking Keizershallen.
