During the official opening, ambassadors Heleen Jaques and Mike Penders were also present. Young goalkeeper Mike Penders, who hails from Maasmechelen and is contracted with Chelsea FC, is currently part of the Red Devils squad.
The Belgian Red Courts project, initiated by the KBVB in collaboration with local authorities and partners, aims to encourage more sports and physical activity among both youth and adults, while also facilitating the transition to local sports clubs. The court is more than just a football venue; it enhances social cohesion and serves as an accessible meeting point for residents to engage in sports, exercise, and social interaction. Core values include respect, fair play, connection, safety, and personal development, aligning with the KBVB's Football & Social Responsibility strategy.
With Umitspor Maasmechelen and the Provincial Technical School Maasmechelen as local partners, the project focuses on sustainable local integration. The intention is to actively utilize the Belgian Red Court for various target groups in the coming years.
The Belgian Red Court aligns with the multi-year plan ‘Maasmachtige ambities 2026–2031’ (Powerful Ambitions 2026–2031) of the Maasmechelen local government, which includes objectives for the (re)development of sports, play, meeting, and relaxation areas, preferably in green surroundings.
Sports Alderman Corrie Bemelmans highlighted the Belgian Red Court as a concrete example of this ambition, providing a publicly accessible space for sports, movement, and social encounters. She expressed hope that children, youth, and adults from the neighborhood will enjoy sports and connect there, supported by the local partners.
Mayor Raf Terwingen expressed pride in the presence of Mike Penders, a Maasmechelen native now part of the Red Devils and playing for Chelsea FC. He views Penders' career as an inspiration for the youth of Maasmechelen, demonstrating the potential of talent, ambition, and passion for sports.
During the opening, the Belgian Red Court was immediately put to use by young people, followed by the official inauguration ceremony and an autograph session with ambassadors Mike Penders and Heleen Jaques. Valkeniersplein now boasts a new, accessible hub for sports and community interaction.
