The demolition is proceeding in phases and is divided into 14 sub-zones, meaning properties are not being demolished according to their house number. Preparatory work begins first in each zone. Properties are checked for asbestos and reusable materials before being carefully dismantled.
There is a strong emphasis on the reuse and recycling of materials. Materials are collected by type and reused where possible, or recycled to minimize waste. After demolition, the cleared sites will be temporarily landscaped as flower meadows.
The initial demolition work has started at the former Colruyt and Dreamland sites, and several houses and outbuildings are being demolished in the vicinity of Heidestraat. From November, the actual demolition work will commence in other sub-zones, including in Helchteren-centrum. The works will gradually progress along the Grote Baan in the coming months and years.
The complete demolition of the 150 properties is scheduled for completion by February 2028, according to the current plan. The schedule is being coordinated to minimize disruption for residents and road users.
