Starting January 1, 2027, the municipality of Mortsel will introduce the diftar system for organic waste collection, using containers equipped with a chip.

In September 2026, residents of Mortsel received information from IGEAN regarding changes in the waste policy, including an information leaflet detailing the implementation of the diftar system for organic waste from January 1, 2027. Waste collection fees will henceforth depend on the amount of waste presented, measured via chipped containers.
Many residents have already indicated their preferred organic waste container. Those who have not yet done so are urged to contact IGEAN as soon as possible. If you do not wish to use an organic waste container, no action is required. Current users can have their existing container chipped or order a new chipped container free of charge while keeping the old one. In both cases, it is necessary to inform IGEAN about the current and desired container.
Anyone who cannot find the accompanying letter with the information leaflet can contact the IGEAN information line at 03 375 32 77 to arrange everything by phone. If the letter is available, the update can also be completed online via www.igean.mijncontainer.be, for which the letter provides the username and password.
Contacting IGEAN is essential to enable the registration and weighing of your organic waste container upon emptying from January 2027. In November and December 2026, containers must be placed at the curbside for chipping. The exact date for this will be communicated by letter in November. Without a chipped organic waste container in January 2027, waste cannot be presented during the collection rounds.
More detailed information can be found in the 'gft met diftar' leaflet. A digital version is available at www.mortsel.be/diftar-gft.
