The municipalities of Hove and Boechout are collaborating to offer free Dutch practice opportunities for newcomers through accessible conversation tables.

The local government of Hove, in collaboration with the local government of Boechout, is organizing free Dutch practice sessions for newcomers. The initiative aims to foster language connection and self-reliance through conversation tables. Participants will practice spoken Dutch using everyday themes such as grocery shopping, current events, or the human body.
The meetings take place in Boechout on Mondays from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM in the library (J. Van Hoofplein 20), and in Hove on Wednesdays from 7 PM to 9 PM in the library (De Markgraaf, Kapelstraat 8).
Volunteers are the driving force behind this initiative. Angie, one of the volunteers, finds satisfaction in seeing participants grow. She guides them in practical speaking skills and notices how language helps them become more independent, sometimes even leading to employment or a new home. "It's wonderful to see how they feel more at ease and have fun in the group at the same time," says Angie.
Anne-Mie, drawing on her experience as an English teacher, emphasizes a personal and empathetic approach. She sometimes divides the group into smaller teams so everyone can practice at their own level. "I want newcomers to feel truly welcome and notice that we enjoy working with them. After two hours of working with the participants, I always go home feeling warm and fulfilled," she shares.
Individuals who wish to contribute to the well-being of newcomers and help them improve their Dutch can sign up as volunteers. As a volunteer, you will facilitate the practice sessions, collaborate with enthusiastic fellow volunteers, and experience the satisfaction of small but significant successes. The time commitment is approximately 2 to 3.5 hours per week, including preparation, and is fully adapted to your availability. Attendance is not required every week.
