Cemeteries in Geel are increasingly being converted into green spaces where tranquility and mourning coexist with nature. The city's groundskeepers have been working for years to enhance greenery and serenity in these locations. Both spring and summer, as well as autumn, offer a rich natural environment that also provides shelter for small animals.
The Sint-Dimpna cemetery has undergone a significant green transformation in recent years. Through insect-friendly mowing practices and careful grave maintenance, the historical value of the cemetery is being combined with an environmentally friendly approach. On Sunday, November 1st, the city, in collaboration with Geel FM, will host the 'Reveil' comfort concert at this cemetery. Local music, poetry, and life stories will create a subdued setting for remembering loved ones. The concert will be held in three sessions at 5 PM, 6 PM, and 7 PM to accommodate more visitors.
In Bel, Geel's first nature cemetery opened last summer, adjacent to the existing cemetery. This new location, nestled within the woods, offers relatives the opportunity to bury urns or scatter ashes in a natural and serene environment. During its development, the city paid close attention to accessibility, with walking paths made from existing local materials, suitable for wheelchair users.
In early November, the cemetery in Bel will be expanded with additional space for trees and green fields, contributing to a peaceful atmosphere. Extra benches and paved access paths will further enhance the site's comfort and accessibility, allowing everyone to pause in tranquility.
